3 Questions for Frank Schunder
Our sustainability series enters its third stage: In this interview, environmental engineer Frank Schunder explains how Isabellenhütte uses water efficiently at its Dillenburg site and takes responsibility for the environment and security of supply through modern recycling systems.
Water conservation is one of the key issues in environmental management at many companies—what responsibility does Isabellenhütte bear as one of the largest companies in Dillenburg?
Water is an indispensable raw material for many of our production processes, particularly for cooling, cleaning, and metallurgical processes. As one of the largest employers and industrial sites in Dillenburg, we are committed to using this resource sustainably and efficiently.
A distinctive characteristic of our site is our use of local water resources from the Nanzenbach river and the connected reservoir. The water is used primarily for cooling purposes and is then carefully returned to the natural water cycle. By continuously monitoring water levels and consumption, we ensure that there is no impact on local water resources. At the same time, this also reduces our demand for drinking water from the public water supply.
And which measures are decisive?
The focus is on measures to improve water efficiency. These include, in particular, closed-loop cooling systems, modern water infrastructure, and comprehensive consumption monitoring via water meters.
By tracking consumption within our processes, we can identify opportunities for savings, detect leaks, and implement targeted optimizations. In addition, cooling systems have been automated and more closely linked to actual machine operation, thereby preventing unnecessary water consumption.
Another key element is the ongoing development of our recycling systems. This enables us to reuse water multiple times and significantly reduces our demand for fresh and processed water.

A Look into the Future: What Opportunities Does This Hold for Isabellenhütte?
Efficient water management provides both environmental and economic benefits. Reducing the consumption of fresh and processed water lowers operating costs while also conserving local water resources.
In addition, we are strengthening the stability of our site’s water supply. The current drought, which is directly affecting our region in Central Hesse as well as our company, clearly demonstrates that climate change is real, and that resource-conserving adaptation measures must not be put on the long-term agenda. Water-saving technologies and closed-loop systems help reduce dependence on fresh and process water and minimize production risks. In this way, we optimally combine environmental responsibility with economic stability and strengthen the long-term viability of our facility in Dillenburg.
