Three Questions for Benjamin Medzech and Jörg Sack

State-of-the-art filtration technology, regular emissions measurements, and targeted noise control measures: At its Dillenburg site, Isabellenhütte relies on a certified environmental management system and continuous monitoring. Benjamin Medzech and Jörg Sack explain how the company minimizes environmental risks, protects local residents, and prepares for future requirements.

Besides climate change, environmental pollution is one of the biggest global problems — how is Isabellenhütte addressing this challenge at its Dillenburg site?

As one of the region’s larger manufacturing companies, we take our responsibility toward the environment and public health very seriously. Our goal is to protect and sustainably strengthen the local community and the environment to the best of our ability. To this end, we rely on state-of-the-art filtration technology, an ISO 14001-certified environmental management system, and regular monitoring of our facilities.

As part of the re-approval process for the smelting plant, we also acquired a new exhaust system with a taller chimney. The design is based on a report from an accredited testing laboratory. As a result, the plant now meets the current state of the art.

We have also made targeted investments in noise control: A noise inventory identifies the relevant sources on the company premises, including Manderbach. Based on this, technical measures were implemented that have improved protection for residents and the surrounding area during nighttime hours. As a result, we were able to reduce nighttime noise levels by a total of 10 dB. This is an important step, as a reduction of 10 dB is perceived by humans as roughly a half reduction in volume.

What measures are being taken to minimize risks?

We regularly identify, assess, and monitor environmental risks—including through internal audits, independent emissions measurements, and continuous monitoring of our facilities. Our approach is clear: Protecting the environment is at the heart of our planning and decision-making processes from the very beginning.

The ISO 14001 environmental management system establishes clear processes and responsibilities for this purpose. At the same time, the noise inventory is updated so that we can identify any potential need for action at an early stage.

What are the key priorities for the future, and what opportunities do these measures present?

Going forward, we will continue to focus on protecting the environment and continuously improving our measures through modern emission-reduction technologies, optimized production processes, and regular inspections.

One important issue is the new EU regulations on heavy metal dust emissions, which will take effect in 2029. We are already working on this today to ensure we reliably meet the requirements.

For us, these measures present several opportunities: They strengthen the trust of employees, local residents, customers, and government agencies; secure our long-term presence in the region; and support our sustainability goals. For us, it is clear that sustainable business practices and technological excellence are inseparably linked.
