Precise current measurement in vehicles

As current measurement using a shunt resistor requires direct integration in the measuring section and thus guarantees a highly accurate measurement result, the shunt is preferred by car manufacturers in this application.  

Market-leading shunt solutions

Due to the specific challenge (lack of space, high technical requirements and use of DCB substrates), Isabellenhütte's 2- and 4-terminal shunt solutions have established themselves as market leaders in the automotive industry. This means that our electron beam welded shunts for high rated currents and contact point temperatures can be used on both standard FR4 boards and DCB boards. 

Elements and structure of the front suspension of a modern car

We recommend the following shunt resistors (mainly 0.5 mOhm) for this application: 

  • BVT / BVS (2-terminal)
  • BVB / BVN (4-terminal, especially DCB-compatible)

With regard to the temperature cycles that occur with DCB ceramics, the BVB and BVN shunts are preferred and recommended by manufacturers due to their increased design. You also benefit from an improved TCR value with the 4-terminal shunt technology.
