The market for power tools is shifting from corded to cordless tools. To guarantee a long service life for cordless tools, precise shunt-based current measurement is required.

Current measurement for power tools
Shunt resistors precisely measure the current flow in power tools and thus enable exact control of the motor power - for optimum performance, efficiency and safety. They detect overloads or inefficient states at an early stage, protect the electronics and extend the service life. Particularly with battery-powered devices, they contribute to energy optimization by dynamically adjusting power consumption. With their high precision, temperature stability and compact design, Isabellenhütte shunts are ideal for modern power tools.
High-precision shunts with low thermal resistance
Brushless BLDC or PMSM motors offer many advantages over conventional brush motors in power tools, such as improved energy consumption, long service life, low noise levels, compact size and low weight.

Almost all developers who want to select the right shunt for their power tool system are faced with the same question: choosing a higher shunt resistance for a higher voltage drop is important for a higher measurement resolution and system accuracy. At the same time, however, the power loss through the shunt increases, which leads to undesirable heating of the circuit board of the power tool. This temperature increase also affects the accuracy due to the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR). For this reason, lower resistance values are preferable.
The shunt solution from Isabellenhütte also meets this challenge in its application thanks to its outstanding performance with low internal thermal resistance and low TCR.
